SUPPLIES

Supplies vary depending on student experience and ability level.  I would prefer to speak with you, either in person or over the phone before the first lesson to discuss any books or materials you may need to bring. Any other books or instrument questions I prefer to answer on an individual basis.

Students will first need a tuner and a metronome. These can be downloaded free on to your phone but go to Ye olde Music for help in shopping for them. Later a music stand, strings, amp, cables, picks, slides, books, tubes, effect pedals, replacement/upgrade parts or anything being discussed:

There are many books that I teach through and will be mentioned at the appropriate time to the individual student. One should have a healthy home music library.

Logbook – A notebook for watching progress which is passed out on day one. Basically, once a routine is established and progress is noticeable this won’t be needed as much but is important at the start of private lessons between the teacher and student for many reasons.

Tuner   – Back in the day, the student learned to tune by ear with the pitchfork. Good to have anyway. A Pitchfork vibrates when struck to give a note of a specific pitch. Purchased around $5, the battery never runs out and fits in a pocket comfortably. You will need a kind named A440. A great ear training device.                          Chromatic tuner – A second tuner is also needed and a must-have item. The more the instrument is in tune the more enjoyable practicing and performing will be. The most popular and accurate chromatic tuner out right now is named, the “Snark Tuner” by Snark  (pictured below). This is an attachable tuner for your instrument running on the vibration of pitch or sound wave. Purchase this item at any local music store for under $20. This tuner is professional, fast and again – very accurate.

The Snark Chromatic tuner is a great tuner and runs off a battery already installed and easy to replace. I’ll show the student how to use the device once purchased and brought into the lesson. Also for those students wanting a Tuner App for their phone be it android or iPhone, a virtual tuner could be download free! One I agree with is named the “Fine Chromatic Tuner”. Download the Fine Chromatic Tuner here by pressing on this Google Play logo:

Metronome  -The metronome is the undisputed and most effective learning tool for improving the rhythmical and technical abilities in music education.  A metronome is a device used by musicians that marks time at a selected rate by giving a regular tick and the speed at which a passage of music is or should be played. Since 1895, having the widest range of metronomes in the world are made by Wittner:

There are digital ones made by Korg:

Good for training one to switch from chord to chord (like in songs) in time. Excellent for progressing on the instrument and used mostly for scales, technique or studying to get better at any difficult passage within any piece of music.

The best virtual metronome I have run across that has a self-regulated speed trainer is the App named Metronome Beats and I strongly suggest getting this free App. Download it here by pressing below on the Google Play logo:

Valid Email address  – All students are required to have a valid email address so I can send music, instruction or directions to an event.

Basic Folder If needing a folder at any time for all the loose paper handed out from time to time, just ask for a free one. The school or I will have some.

Again, feel free to call/text anytime. John Stockdale (843)801-1475 PLEASE support LOCAL music stores!
